EMAN2

EMAN2 is a new major release of EMAN. While not yet the polished product EMAN1 is, it has a fully functional GUI, and in most ways it is now a full replacement for EMAN1. Nonetheless, by design, it is quite possible to have both EMAN1 and EMAN2 installed simultaneously if you find you need EMAN1 for some critical functionality that has not been ported to EMAN2 yet. While refinements in EMAN2 DO work, we are still working out the optimal refinement options (there are quite a few of them).

NOTE: This download is automatically updated every night. The date is meaningless.

IMPORTANT NOTE: During July and August, 2009, expect significant changes in the workflow interface. Most should remain backwards compatible with earlier work you've done, but there is a possibility some things will break. We are planning for an official beta-release sometime in mid-August, and are trying to make things more feature complete before that time. If you encounter any problems, please do let us know.


  • This is a prerelease version of EMAN2. Many things are working well, but not everything is.

  • There may still be difficulties with the Windows version, if you do encounter problems, please let us know

  • Documentation is sparse but growing, and provided through the Wiki.

  • If compiling from source, or you need help with the binaries, please check the appropriate Wiki page before complaining.

  • Users of Fedora Core 8, note that there is a bug in the SELinux system on FC8, which produces a segmentation fault every time an EMAN2 program exits. The programs run properly to completion, so this is largely harmless, but may cause a few issues. We spent a great deal of time looking for a fix for this without success. The problem does not exist on Fedora Core 9, so we suggest upgrading.

  • These packages also include SPARX. This will replace the separate SPARX distributions sometime in mid-2007


  • For windows(XP/Vista 32/64) user, EMAN2 work with it's own Python2.5, which preinstalled some site-packages like PyQt4, PyOpenGL etc., So if you have your own Python installed, you may need uninstall it if there is confilict. If you have a previous eman2 release installed, please uninstall it before you install a new one. After installation, you can open a command prompt and type e2.py. If you get Python prompt, your EMAN2 is working now. If you get error like, "ImportError: DLL load failed: The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect.", please install Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable downloaded from http://ncmi.bcm.edu/ncmi/software/counter_222/software_91/index_html. EMAN2 may have various problems on windows platform.   • For windows user, if you want to install both EMAN1 and EMAN2. Please install EMAN1 first, then install EMAN2. Otherwise, when you launch eman1 program, you will see error message like: "The procedure entry point H5Eget_auto could not be located in the dynamic link library hdf5dll.dll.".


  • You are welcome to report any bugs and issues. By this way, We will keep a track on the bugs or issues you report. You need register first with a valid email address to input a bug report.


  • The EMNA2 32 bit binary crashes when display 2D image. We are in process to fix this issue.
