Charge to the workshop: To develop a set of grand challenges for Nanomedicine and Nanobiology which capture the scientific and organizational opportunities for the diverse researchers at Rice, BCM and the neighboring institutions.
Tangible Output: Series of powerpoints generated by participants which expand upon, and highlight the grand challenges, progress towards meeting them, and specific areas of focus for researchers in this area.
Structure: This one-day workshop will first set the stage for work that is ongoing in the Houston area in Nanomedicine and Nanobiology and then let participants work in small groups to define key areas of opportunities and gaps for work in this arena.
Starting point – topics to consider for Grand Challenges:
Some possible topics are listed and other suggested topics are welcome
- Targeting nanomaterials effectively (naturally occurring nanomachines, surface coating, biodistribution, materials)
- Achieving FDA approval for novel new nanomaterials (toxicity, general manufacturing principles)
- New tools, methods and ideas for characterizing nano-materials, nano-bio interfaces and their functions both in vitro and in vivo
- Defining the right clinical problems for nanotechnology
- The role of computation and informatics in Nanomedicine
- Organizational challenges – team development, finding resources for interdisciplinary teams, managing across institutions, training students
Pre-work: All participants need to register by August 12th and bring two powerpoint slides: one on their research in nanomedicine, and another on possible areas of collaborations with cross-disciplines.
